Since some music publishers were hesitant to have so many hymns by one person in their hymnals, Crosby used nearly 100 different pseudonyms during her career which I had not been aware of ever before!
Crosby was never bitter about her disability and at the age of 8 she wrote these verses about her condition:
- Oh what a happy soul I am,
- Although I cannot see;
- I am resolved that in this world
- Contented I will be.
- How many blessings I enjoy,
- That other people don't;
- To weep and sigh because I'm blind,
- I cannot, and I won't."
"It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank Him for the dispensation.
If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me."
She also once said, "When I get to heaven, the 1st face that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Savior!"
She composed her poems and hymns entirely in her mind and then dictated them to someone else. She was said to work mentally on as many as 12 hymns at once before dictating them all out.

What a lovely ~ jam-packed treasure so full of Scripture, poems and beautiful pictures!!! I haven't covered much as I like to let each post sink in. I noticed your mention of George Matheson. I have had taped into the front cover of my Bible for 12 years the following by him: "A long deferred fulfillment carries its own pains, but to wait for hope, to see no glimmer of a prospect and yet refuse despair; to have nothing but the night before the casement, and yet to keep the casement open for possible stars; to have a vacant place in my heart, and yet allow that place to be filled by no inferior Presence - that is the greatest Patience in the Universe."
I will be sure to visit again to enjoy and ponder your treasures!

If only we with eyes to see would remember her touching words, not only in Hymns..but this quote:
and know that the LORD works in us His good pleasure...
who knows what we might do for Him!

This is one of my favorite hymns also; and even as a long-time user of of cyberhymnal, I didn't realize the author used other names and wonder why she used so many! What a blessed and talented lady.

I just love the hymns that Fanny Crosby wrote; they are so beautiful! I have read her words about her blindness before and it still amazes me!
Oh how, I want my life to glorify God! Somedays the flesh gets so much in the way. I am grateful that the Lord is merciful and does not desire me to stay there!

I had no idea Fanny Crosby used SO MANY pseudonyms either ... all
just because publishers didn't want so many hymns written by 1 single author ~ little did they understand that those hymns even with pseudonyms WERE written by 1 SINGLE AUTHOR ~ the Lord Himself as He moved her heart to overflowing :o)

It is amazing to hear her words regarding her blindness, especially since it happened as a result of a procedure done at age 6 weeks!
As you say, the flesh often gets in the way and I am thankful that He is full of grace and patience and always gives me another chance to *get back on track* so to speak :o)
